Dear Sean Raphael, Cameron Hope, and all members of the BC Hockey Board,
I am writing to you today as a concerned member of the hockey community to discuss your decision to prohibit people from participating in the BCHL and minor hockey associations. This is already negatively impacting the Greater Trail Minor Hockey Association and has the potential to significantly impact all minor hockey associations in British Columbia.
There have been punitive measures taken against individuals who have chosen to affiliate with the BCHL. While I appreciate the need to maintain high standards of conduct and organization commitment within BC Hockey, I believe this approach has unintended consequences for minor hockey associations.
In recent years, the Greater Trail Minor Hockey association has struggled to find enough volunteers to successfully run an association of approximately 400 players. We have especially been struggling to find referees and have had to cancel games because of it. We are losing eight referees for this upcoming season because you will not grant them exemptions to referee in both the BCHL and our minor hockey association. The board is currently considering canceling home tournaments in some divisions.
We are respectfully asking you to reverse this decision immediately. We understand a precedent has been set where officials have worked in Non-Sanctioned Leagues in the past and have still worked in minor hockey games and we would like this to be allowed for this season and all seasons to follow. We are committed to fostering a strong and vibrant hockey community, just as you are, so please reconsider the impacts your choices are having on minor hockey associations.
